Piper Perabo isn’t worried about other female sleuths muscling in on her television territory.
Starting her second season of the USA espionage series “Covert Affairs” Tuesday, June 7, the actress is aware of ABC’s proposed update of “Charlie’s Angels,” with Minka Kelly (“Friday Night Lights”) among its stars. Perabo believes her CIA-novice character, Annie Walker, would stack up well against such rivals.
“I wonder how good they are at hand-to-hand combat,” she muses to Zap2it. “Before I even started doing this show, it seemed there was a rash of these series led by women, and I really enjoyed watching them. ‘Damages’ is one of my favorite shows, and if there are more of them where the lead characters are female, I think that’s great.”
And if those women should get bruised in the process, Perabo will sympathize. “I was injured in the finale,” she says of reaching the “Covert Affairs” finish line last time. “It was lucky that it was the end of the season, so I had plenty of time to get all the way back. It was during a fight scene, and I just fell. It was sort of a freak accident; I just misstepped.”
Nominated for a Golden Globe Award for the freshman round of “Covert Affairs,” Perabo did plentiful movie work before making her leap into television. During her recent hiatus, she filmed the sci-fi adventure “Looper” with Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but arguably her best-known project — “Coyote Ugly” (2000), which cable has given a strong afterlife — educated her in the finer points of strutting atop a bar.
That brand of fame hasn’t earned Perabo an invitation from ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” … at least not yet. “I know about it, but primetime television is on when I’m still at work, so there are a lot of shows that I don’t see. Dance is something that I really enjoy, and it’s also part of staying in shape for ‘Covert Affairs.” I train at a dance studio, so it would be interesting, for sure.”
